Richard formerly headed the U.S. Patent and Trademark group for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation of over 40 patent and trademark attorneys and managed global litigation and patent prosecution. Richard previously served as General Patent Counsel at CIBA Vision Corporation, where actively managed U.S. and global patent litigation, as well as patent prosecution and opinions. Richard successfully initiated and managed the case of Wesley Jessen Corp v. Bausch & Lomb, Inc. which led to an injunction against one of CIBA Vision’s major competitors, and the removal of an infringing product from the market. Before taking the helm at CIBA Vision, Richard worked at Dow Corning Corporation as Senior Managing Counsel, and prior to that worked in private practice at the Geneva, Switzerland office of the international law firm of Jones, Day. Richard graduated from Knox College with a BA in Chemistry. He received his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University, and subsequently obtained a DES in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied at Oxford University while in law school, and at the Harvard Business School as part of the Novartis – Harvard business collaboration. He is registered to practice at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and admitted to practice in the states of New Jersey.
Elizabeth Gearhart, Ph.D. (formerly Elizabeth McNamara) is a marketing executive, podcast host, AI and podcasting speaker, and founder of a professional podcast production studio. She serves as Chief Marketing Officer at Gearhart Law and is the founder of Gear Media Studios, where she provides podcast production and marketing consulting focused on long-term brand visibility, including AI visibility. Elizabeth earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Western Washington University and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado Boulder under her maiden name, Elizabeth McNamara. Her early career included industry roles at Dow Chemical and Dow Corning, followed by licensure as a U.S. patent agent. She now applies her scientific, intellectual property, and marketing expertise to help professionals and organizations communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively. Since 2018, Elizabeth has been the co-host of Passage to Profit, a nationally syndicated radio show and podcast airing on 38 stations nationwide, with its flagship station WOR 710 in New York City and distribution through the iHeartMedia network. In 2026, she also became co-host of Real AI Use Cases – Business Owners Roundtable. Elizabeth is a frequent speaker and educator on podcasting, AI, branding, and marketing strategy, presenting for libraries, business organizations, conferences, and professional associations, including Podfest, CIANJ, and the American Bar Association Intellectual Property Law Section. Richard Gearhart, Esq. is a life sciences intellectual property attorney and the Founding Partner of Gearhart Law, LLC, where he advises pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics, and health-technology companies on patents, trademarks, licensing, and IP-driven commercialization strategy. With over three decades of experience, Richard helps founders, executives, and investors align intellectual property portfolios with fundraising, regulatory pathways, competitive positioning, and long-term enterprise value. A trained chemist and former senior in-house IP leader in the life sciences industry, he brings deep domain fluency to complex scientific and business challenges. He is also an active angel investor and a member of several investor groups, providing clients with a first-hand investor perspective on risk, valuation, and growth. Before founding Gearhart Law, Richard held senior in-house and international roles at leading global organizations. He served as head of the U.S. Patent and Trademark group for Novartis Pharmaceuticals, overseeing a large team of attorneys and managing global litigation, prosecution, and strategic counseling across product development and transactions including FDA approved products such as Gleevec®.
